Since graduating in 2013, Rachel has worked as an engineer across consultancy, construction and operations. Her initiative to begin Būteros was sparked through her own lived experience.
Derived from the Greek word Presbuteros (meaning elder), Būteros is focused on strengthening the next generation’s technical confidence and workplace proficiency. They do this by:
- providing access to a network of coaches who are retired technical and practical professionals; and
- creating and managing inspiring, practical bespoke graduate structures.
Būteros is one of LegalVision’s valued clients, so we have asked Rachel Bermoy a few questions to get to know her better. Read on to find out more.
1. What is the biggest challenge facing your business right now?
Figuring out what marketing terms to use to explain what we try to provide without risking clients thinking we are doing what is already done. Our creative approach doesn’t exist in the current market, so there is a trial-and-error process or branding and rebranding to get the communication and perception right!
2. When hiring, what is the number one interview question you always ask?
What is your motivation to join?
3. What are the latest developments in your industry and how is your business preparing for them?
The WA engineering market is subject to the boom and bust cycle, impacting which demographic is employed. As things pick up and hiring increases, new experienced employees are generally focussing on integrating into new companies’ systems, procedures, and their own workload. Training others isn’t always a priority over getting the job done but in a high-risk field knowledge, understanding and wisdom are extremely important in a practical, legal and commercial sense. Būteros is strategically designing practical knowledge transfer solutions to accommodate these phases in the economy. Where there is a downturn, our engaging and creative ideas will help to add technical experience while utilising the economy’s slower pace to its full advantage. When things are booming and going fast, we have additional support to enhance their knowledge and wisdom to apply it correctly.
Over the next few years, we also have to consider AI progressing as a tool to make the engineering world more efficient and what impacts it may have on project timelines and the quality of training for the younger workforce. Internet-based platforms are already readily available tools that give instant feedback more or less. It would only be natural for a young professional to go here if there aren’t people available to answer their technical queries and decide for themselves. Our business is looking at researching and explaining the positives, risks and legalities of such platforms in the engineering space.
4. What do you do when you’re not working?
Great question! If I am in the mood I like to clean, mindlessly, and organise my space. I thoroughly enjoy the company and deep conversations with my husband and close friends. I often engage with my musical side by singing around the house, dancing or playing my drum kit to neo soul/R&B music.
5. What’s one book, podcast, or TV show you’d recommend to other business owners?
