As a condition of registration, RTOs are responsible for ensuring their full compliance with the VET Standards. These Standards require a rigorous assessment to ensure that learners obtain knowledge, develop skills and perform in their workplace to expected industry standards.

Training providers must first go through an evaluation and audit process, conducted by their state or territory’s training authority. This ensures that the organisation can provide training and assessment services in compliance with the national standards.

When an organisation applies to be an RTO, particular attention is paid to the trainers and assessors, as well as the systems and strategies in place for quality training and assessment.

Once registered, an RTO’s obligations include responsiveness to the industry and learner’s needs, providing quality assurance as well as fair complaints handling. Importantly, RTOs failing to satisfy these quality standards may have their registration cancelled, or suspended.
