Metadata is a hot topic in 2015 after support for changes to the Telecommunications (Interception and Access) Act 1979 (Cth) (the TIA), which alters the customer information telecommunication companies are required to keep.

Metadata is essentially “data about data”. For example, you might make a call to your friend – metadata is the number you contacted your friend on and how long the call lasted, but not the contents of the telephone call. Another example is when you send an email – metadata is the email address and the time you sent the message, but not the contents of the email.

If changes to the TIA pass, the telco company your business uses as a service provider will be required to keep your business’ metadata. Changes to the TIA prompt many people to think about privacy – which is one of the key reasons why, if you run an online business, your website should have a privacy policy.

Privacy policies state how a business deals with personal information. If the Privacy Act applies to your business, you must have a privacy policy or you could face hefty fines – up to $1.7 million for companies or $340,000 for entities that are not companies. LegalVision lawyers are experts at auditing and drafting privacy policies. They have a wealth of experience in compliance with the Privacy Act 1988 and can provide your business targeted legal advice.
