Meet Sam Auty
Sam is a Legal Account Manager and Lawyer in LegalVision’s Growth team. She explains what her day looks like and how she spends her time when she’s not at LegalVision: fencing for the Australian team all around the world!
What’s an average day look like for you?
5:30am: First thing’s first: I head straight to the gym to get in a solid workout before heading into the office.
8:00am: When I get into the office, I check emails over a coffee, then dive into strategic projects, like our subscription services launch.
10:00am: Time for client calls! These form part of our outbound campaigns, subscription service and health checks. I also use this time to follow up anyone we may have met at expos. Our most recent expo was at Startcon.
12:30pm: Lunch, my favourite time of day!
1:30pm: I make more client calls, mock up some proposals, provide quotes to clients and help with strategic projects, like developing and introducing a subscription service to LV clients.
5:30-6:00pm: After work, I head to training and fence for a few hours.
9:30pm: Home time! I have a quick dinner and head to bed. Rinse and repeat!
How did you get into fencing?
When I was in primary and high school, I participated in a lot of sports. Ironically, I started fencing in primary because my Dad thought I should improve my hand-eye coordination. I’ve been doing it since I was 10-years-old and haven’t looked back!
I got serious in high school. Now I do international competitions and I’m on the Australian Fencing Team. Recently, I was in Canberra for the Commonwealth Fencing Championships and this year I’ve also been to China for the World Championships. But my favourite place was Rome, where I trained twice a day with the Italian team. It was incredible!
What is your key motivation?
If I wasn’t helping people, I wouldn’t get satisfaction from my job. Helping people is key to my motivation every day.
Also, being the best person I can be is something I get to express when I’m fencing. It feels great to improve constantly at something.
What’s your favourite thing about your job?
Speaking to clients!
I speak to people about their businesses and passions every day. It’s a great part of my job. The second best part is lunch! I love sharing a meal with my team at LV.
What’s surprised you most about working at LV?
I really enjoy the people I’m working with. My team is down to earth and empathetic. It can be a difficult thing to find in the legal industry, particularly in a commercial law firm.
What’s an unexpected skill you’ve developed at LV?
Learning how to set up my own desk and software before our IT support extraordinaire, Daphne, joined us.
Being part of a startup means you have to be willing to take on a variety of tasks, like setting up expo stalls, clearing out our old office basement, and diagnosing issues on the ground. You pick up small, valuable skills every day here.
What are your top three resources?
- My water bottle! I don’t go anywhere without it.
- My laptop. I don’t just use it for my job, but also for music, organising my life and daily admin.
- Headphones. I love listening to music every day.
From my first fencing club: “I’m the best but there is no one lesser than me.”
Favourite post-fencing competition meal?
Anything with a ridiculous amount of cheese in it. After the championship in Canberra, we got Domino’s – cheesy garlic pizza for me! And I love chocolate. I also bought myself a big, fat chocolate brownie to accompany the pizza.
People think athletes are healthy, and they are when most of the time. But once athletes have downtime, they like to reward themselves with their favourite cheat meals, and they don’t feel guilty about it!
