Yes, the trustee needs to obtain a tax file number (TFN) and lodge annual income tax returns for the trust. The trust’s TFN is distinct and separate from your personal TFN (whether as a beneficiary or trustee). This number is distinct from an ABN however you can obtain both sets of numbers with the same application form.
